Share the Glory
My home was not affected by Hurricane Rita. But my heart was. I am part of the Junior Firefighter Program in Erath. I did not go to search and rescue, but both of my parents did. I was taking care of a house full of children. Every time they would just play by themselves, I would go in to the bathroom and just cry. I was worried my parents would not come back, and my grandparents’ house had a few inches of water in it. My great-great uncle has no more home, it was under water. My good friend has no home. After the water in Erath was gone, I went with the fire department. Hand-out water, food, and ice. There were a few people that came up to us and said that their children have not eaten in 2 days. There was this man that I was giving water and ice to. He was smiling, but he said, “I don’t even know why I am smiling. I left New Orleans just to be hit by another hurricane.” I told him, “May God bless you,” and as he drove away I cried because it has to be painful to be hit by 2 hurricanes in less than 1 month. And during the 1 or 2 weeks we were doing that, I went and helped out at the Erath High School band room. As a band member of that high school, it was very painful to see my second home destroyed. All my memories from the band room keep coming back to me. Also, one day, my mom passed out, I was going through a lot of pressure during those weeks. I think Steubenville will help me because when I went last year, I was able to get everything that was bothering me off my chest. I was just so easy to let God take it off of me. To be honest Steubenville is the only place where I can be myself an let everything go.
